The Soul-Eroding Effects of Facebook

Theological Thoughts:

On the Soul Eroding Effects of Facebook

Documented by: Lee Anne Ferguson

A few years ago, I was bombarded with invitations to “join” Facebook. That strange and compulsive pressure caused me to really take a step back and pray for God’s guidance. As time has gone by, I am forever grateful that God has had mercy on me, by NEVER letting me and my true friends “join” the fallen masses into such a horrible snare of the soul! Over the years, as I’ve watched and waited upon the Lord, He’s allowed many things to manifest that I would have never been able to discern if I had been involved in hyper-socialized media.

Sadly, those who fall for it think they’re keeping up with everyone, but completely lose touch with reality and all those who didn’t jump on the bandwagon with them. They become delusional, thinking they have hundreds of “friends,” that aren’t really friends at all, but are just Facebook addicts like themselves, with hundreds of their own phony friends, competing for the same attention. No one can even go anywhere anymore without their picture being taken and put on Facebook without their permission. Even scientists are now recognizing that data-drenched minds that are “connected” to the world are becoming so short-circuited, re-wired and “cyberspaced”-out, that it’s causing severe, mind-altering and soul eroding effects, such as:

  • Lack of zeal for truth, constant prayer and the ability to think deeply about the things of God
  • Favoring “sugar coated,” shallow, self-help philosophy over the true gospel of Jesus Christ
  • Being a busy body in other people’s business and disrespect for others privacy (even their own)
  • Addiction
  • Severely short attention spans
  • Dumbed-down verbal, writing, reading and social skills
  • Gossip and Drama
  • Covetousness and materialism
  • Desensitization to evil influences
  • Memory loss
  • Inability to carry on meaningful and mutual conversation that’s not one-sided and all over the place……jumping from one subject to another in a matter of seconds.
  • Disconnected from reality and distracted by a $100 + a mo. “smart” phone—- just to name a few

“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Josh.24:15). I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in Thy way” (Psa.101:3; 119:37). When God gathers His people out from among the fallen masses, He protects and “disconnects” them from the plagues that inevitably come upon all who are involved in idolatry (2Pet.1:4). Facebook is one of the worst forms of self-worship on the planet and encourages the sin of covetousness and all the vanity that goes along with it. “All that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world (1Jn.2:16). Having “followers” and “fan pages” that accept the “likes” and praises of others is one of the worst forms of pride and self-absorption imaginable! Jesus said, “Woe unto you, when all speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets” (Lk.6:26). “Whoever is a friend of the world is an enemy of God (Ja.4:4). “They are of the world; therefore they speak of the world, and the world heareth them” (1Jn.4:5).

You justify yourselves before men; but God knows your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God(Lk 16:15). The whole world lies in wickedness where God’s people are hated, not “liked” (Jn.15:19, 17:14; 1Jn.4:5, 5:19). They are set free in Christ, not “linked” (unequally yoked or bound) to the world. “You will keep in perfect peace, whose minds are stayed upon You” (Isa.26:3).

Back in the day, old-timers would sit around and actually talk about one subject at a time, pondering upon each, with breaks in-between, where moments of contemplative silence would leave room for interactive interjection. Today with the onslaught of technology, people converse so differently that it is dizzying to even try to interject and interact, because the subject jumps from one thing to another in a matter of just seconds, because that’s how hyper-socialized media has trained them to communicate. They sift thru tons of sin-filled sludge all the time just to get any substance out of it at all, so their conversation also becomes vain babbling with no substance.

Many can no longer carry on a normal conversation without texting someone else at the same time!! Their morals decline so badly, they’re no longer decent and respectful. Their “web” pages are “linked” to all kinds of evil. And many dishonor their marriages by reconnecting with ex’s and other inappropriate contacts. “Mass- email” chain-letters and extracts of “truth” from ungodly sources are also par for the course. Shallow cliché’s like…. “Life is like a…. (fill in the blank with whatever),” distract from God’s Word with an appearance of truth that lures in the simple minded. “The simple believes everything; but the prudent gives thought to his steps” (Prov.14:15). Jesus said, “Judge not by appearance, but judge with righteous judgment” (Jn.7:24).

“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit” (Col.2:8). Twitter and Facebook “feeds” are literally “feeding” minds with shallow, philosophical deceit. And just think of the HUGE impact these can have, such as “Love Wins,”—- get my drift? How else would society slowly begin to accept such a perversion of God’s truth? IT STARTS SMALL. Big things really can come in small packages! No wonder technology keeps getting smaller and easier to pack around! And no wonder it’s easier for marriages to be broken.

The “connection” between technology and the moral decay of society has become so obvious, only those blinded by the god of this world could deny it. Facebook “friends” are becoming BIG influences, little seeds that become full grown tares among the wheat. Yet, technology can be used for good, ONLY if one doesn’t enter the net of covetousness and adultery or get “Linked in” with the ungodly and the worldwide web of shallow info overload, such as Facebook, Topix, Twitter, etc.  Because such shallow streams of sin-filled sludge hides the diamond in the rough, the pearl of great price—the truth that is found only in Jesus Christ—– not extracts of “truth” from the ungodly sources of humanistic philosophy, Eastern thought or secular psychology.

“There’s a way that seems right to man, but it leads to death,” (Prov.14:12). Philosophy appeals to whatever seems “relevant” to one’s daily life, yet it lacks any absolutes. In other words, it can appeal to ANY religion. Yet, God’s precepts ONLY appeal to those who belong to Him and are the ONLY paths to life, not philosophy. And Jesus is the ONLY way to follow the paths of life, for He IS the way, the truth and the life.  He is ABSOLUTE truth and eternal life……….follow HIM and HIM ONLY!! ——And FLEE FOR YOUR LIFE—— FROM FACEBOOK!!!!

“When He putteth forth His own sheep, He goeth before them, and the sheep follow Him: for they know His voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him” (Jn.10:4-5).

“How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the Lord is God follow Him, if Baal, follow him” (1ki.18:21).
